To the book girls—may your hot, tattooed man on a motorcycle show up at your doorstep with cookies, so you don’t have to leave your house or your book.
Karma never came for the man who took everything from me. The horrible things he had done never came to bite him in the ass. They say people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, so Cameron Fletcher took that advice and built a stone house. He kept everything sealed and impenetrable so karma couldn’t get to him, and it had worked. Until now. Until I grew up and decided I wouldn’t wait for fate to intervene. I would be his karma. And nothing made me happier than planning to burn his life to the ground, exactly like he had done to mine.
Rebel

Rook and Rebel by Kate Crew has been on my radar for a number of months now. Originally I planned on reading it through Kindle Unlimited but I discovered it was also available as an audiobook. I ended up going the audio route and listened to it through Spotify.
Spoilers Sweetie. Jump down to my Final Thoughts to avoid them.
- What a piece of shit you are Elliot.
- Not even the fun, bad reasons.
- Now I want a cookie.
- Does the dad know Rook somehow?
- Oh he definitely remembers you.
- Caught You.
- What.
- Oh snap. I put my lips on his fucking daughter and liked it?.
- Surely messing with the security is going to send some bells off to the security dad father.
- Oh he’ll keep chasing.
- Murder. Orgasms. I’m here.
- Give the poor girl back her vibrator.
- Who knows what you did with it.
- And the stalkee becomes the stalker.
- Yes.
- Holy wrenches Batman.
- Drugs, Rebel. Drugs.
- Is he sick though?
- I’m kinda obsessed with Evie.
- Her own helmet!!
- Pervert cum.
- Tattooed pervert to his hands. I’m dead. That’s great.
- I will never understand the ego of men to think women dress for them. Get off your high horse ant and be thankful you get to witness it.
- Yay. Girls night. I’m guessing the other books will be about Harper and Evie/Aiden.
- Protects the Queen.
- How are you going to explain yourself there Rook.
- Fuck the dad. Fuck Elliot. & fuck Candy too.
- You should probably tell her Rook
- I’m really not convinced the dad is sick.
- She did!
- How much more evidence do you need Regan?
- Fucking Elliot!
- I think I love Hero. And I hope it’s Hero & Harper.
- I mean I still don’t get how the dad with such a prestigious security company didn’t notice Rook coming and going.
Rook & Rebel Review
Minor Spoilers
Rook & Rebel is the first book in The Mavericks series by Kate Crew. It is a (light)dark revenge romcom with similar vibes to Brynne Weaver’s Ruinious Love trilogy. It is not the same. They are both just spicy rom-coms with what some would perceive as darker elements. The Mavericks series revolves around a biker gang, with this book being about a member named Rook.
Rook is out for revenge.
Rook is patient, biding his time until the perfect moment to enact his revenge on the man who ruined his life. As it would turn out, the man who took everything from Rook, is none other than our fmc Regan’s father. Surprise Surprise. After meeting our dear Regan, Rook decides it’s time to make his move. Only, and this will come as no surprise either, he falls in love with the spawn of his enemy instead.
“The guy who killed your parents and tried to burn you two alive, who you desperately want revenge on, now has a hot daughter you’ve been obsessing over, and you find this to be a problem?”
Regan, our little rebel has put her life on hold for her sick father. As his only child, she is eager to learn the family business and keep his legacy alive. Regan’s father is the ultimate dick though and has no real intentions of handing the company over to her. Regan has no clue who her father truly is and is extremely naive when it comes to him. I liked her well enough, I just get irritated when characters don’t ask questions. Sure, this man is her father but she’s an adult who refuses to question him. It’s one thing to accept a bullshit answer, it’s another to not even ask the question.
I wish Regan had been a bit more proactive in her life but it was nice to see her grow a bit of a backbone with Rook around. The standout character for me in Rook & Rebel though was Rook’s sister Evie. I am convinced there will be a book about her and likely Aiden, another member of the Mavericks. Evie comes off as more sure footed and grounded in who she is as a person. I am excited to hopefully get that. I’m also convinced there will be a book about Regan’s friend Harper. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series.
I enjoyed the overall plot of Rook & Rebel. The narration was well done. Lucy Winters, who oddly enough narrated Butcher & Blackbird, was just as great as Rebel as she was Sloane. Sean Masters was great at bringing Rook to life as well. However, I do wish that the audio was a bit more immersive. The audio book is duet style to complement the dual pov but each chapter is read in full by the narrator. I personally prefer that the male narrator read his parts during the female pov and vice versa.

“What a good girl, taking what I give you. Now taste how much you like my mouth on you,” he said, his lips dropping to mine, making me taste myself on his tongue. “You made a fucking mess, baby. All over my face and the bed. I would apologize, but I think it’s the hottest thing I’ve ever seen.”

He rolled up his sleeves, revealing tattooed hands and forearms, which flexed as he moved.
There really wasn’t anything more satisfying than hooking up with a girl who thought I was the monster, getting her off and having her beg for more, only for her to wake up the next day disgusted with herself for how badly she wanted to do it again.
It’s cute you think you don’t want to be a rebel, though. I think I could change your mind really fast.
“Mess? That’s a goddamn work of art. My bike won’t be cleaned ever again.”
She was mine, and there was no chance I wouldn’t catch her. I would always catch her.
“I’m a monster, Regan, but I can be your monster. And in these four walls, with you, I only want to be sweet. I only want you to feel safe because I wouldn’t let anything happen to you.”
I was already falling in love with Regan Fletcher, and true to the Fletcher name, she was bound to ruin my life.
“I’m not fucking around with his daughter. I don’t care who she is to him. She’s mine, and he just threatened to take her away.”
