Welcome to Frat Row.

I discovered Frat Row by Krista Turner Clark when her call for Arc Readers went out. I was intrigued by the tropes, and the fact that it was advertised as a Pitch Black Romance. I was lucky to receive an arc to review but as always, the fact that I received it for free will not be reflected in my review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Skip ahead to my Final Thoughts to avoid possible spoilers in my chaotic thoughts I had while reading.

  1. We are just opening up with a public blow job. Delightful.
  2. A badge for fucking your way through Frat Row. Dead.
  3. Well this is an interesting club that’s for sure.
  4. This poor Uber driver. Although some public foreplay is likely the least of the worst.
  5. Like a fucking flamingo. I’m dead.
  6. Oh and the males do a pin for fucking their way through Frat Row.
  7. For a second there I thought they weren’t both going to be accepted.
  8. Girl, what book are you reading?
  9. Not the LuLu!
  10. Oh the days of sex in cars.
  11. Listen, I had a small car at the time, how they both fitting in this position?
  12. There’s definitely some nefarious shit happening in those woods.
  13. Oh shit.
  14. I mean, that is not a small number.
  15. Le sigh. Nipples are pierced with a needle.
  16. But seriously, what kind of person is Tyler’s dad?
  17. Fifteen million dollars!
  18. If Tyler’s dad is the buyer, I’ll die.
  19. Archer won’t suffer enough I’m afraid.
  20. Idk about this escape. Seems suspish.
  21. Did he just drug her?
  22. Jesus.
  23. Idk if there’s enough pages left for all these mf’s to die the brutal and horrific death they deserve.
  24. That’s some battery life.
  25. I fucking knew it.
  26. Wrong. Tyler my boy, come on now.

Frat Row Review

Minor Spoilers

“I need to know your name, and then I want to know every fucking inch of your body.”

Please, for the love of unicorns-heed the trigger warnings.

Frat Row is the debut release from indie author Krista Turner Clark and if there was a shade after pitch black, that’s where this debut would be placed. I’m talking center of a massive black hole pitch black my friends. The pitchiest black there is and then walk further into the void, because you are not quite there yet.

I thoroughly enjoyed Clark’s debut novel. Overall, the writing and editing were good-which let’s face it is often an issue with debuts from indie authors. Honestly, it’s an issue with some seasoned authors but I digress. I didn’t love the characters-I would never be friends with them, but it would be cool if we ended up lab partners. We could be friendly and vibe but I personally couldn’t really connect with them. I was in university twenty four years ago and even then, that was not the life for me.

It started with a one night stand.

Our mmc, Tyler and our fmc, Cassidy are both freshmen and legacies of two of the biggest and most popular fraternities and sororities on campus. When their one night stand leads to more, all seems wonderful for our two main characters. One night however, Cassidy stumbles on the grotesque underbelly of Tyler’s fraternity. And boy oh boy do things take a dark and vile turn. Cassidy’s life is forever changed as she finds herself abducted and forced into becoming a sex slave.

I would have liked more personality out of our mmc, Tyler. He starts off great, but in the end I wished he had been a bit more something. I felt like there was no urgency or agency to his character. He’s just not going to be my favorite male lead. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Tyler, I liked Cassidy and her bff Blair. Cassidy goes through a good ninety nine percent of those trigger warnings while being trained for her new owner and it is heartbreaking.

Normally as of late, I make a little note of all the spicy chapters. Almost all of those chapters were non consensual in Frat Row. I’ve opted to not specify chapters instead I have this to say-if you can not read about women being sexually assaulted and forced into bdsm sex slave training against their will, do not read this. It is as simple as that.

Fear not, Frat Row does end in a Happily Ever After.

However, I wish there had been more of a downfall to the secret society hidden behind the Alpha Chi fraternity. I could have done with less of the sex slave training and more of those involved coming to gruesome deaths. In the end Tyler just kind of stumbles upon Cassidy, where I wish he had been a bit more proactive and ruthless in finding her. Which is honestly, the biggest reason I wasn’t a fan of his. He’s not the Knight in Shining Armour coming to rescue the Princess-there was no darkness lurking within him to unleash.

I will definitely be reading whatever Clark writes next. For me, the flaws I have with Frat Row are more of a personal preference. I read Dark Romance for the brutality towards abusers when it is applicable. I mean, there are other reasons as well but when it comes to women being sexually assaulted-I want to see those mother fuckers burn. Luckily I can dream up those horrific deaths on my own.

Some women love diamonds around their necks; I love hands.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
