Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are Review

Minor Spoilers

Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are by Harleigh Beck is a Halloween themed erotic horror that messes with your mind. It was a weird, fucked up ride with a heaping side of gaslight the fuck out of me. At no point did I have a full grasp of what was happening.

Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are is told from the perspective of high school teen, Skyler. Her life is forever changed after a night of teenage debauchery. You know the kind. Drinks, drugs and driving intoxicated. By the end of the night Skyler and her bff are covering up a hit and run in which the school’s star quarterback ends up dead. Very I Know What You Did Last Summer of them.

A year later, Skyler’s life is falling apart. The guilt of that night eating away at her soul. While she is barely hanging on, her bff and the rest of their friend group has seemingly moved on. That is until one fine day before Halloween when the star quarterback shows back up to school. Surprise, surprise-Nate’s not dead and the man is out for revenge.

Everyone accepts his paper thin excuse of being rich and affording the best care money can buy. Personally, I wasn’t buying it. Was there not a funeral? An investigation? A star quarterback dies, is mourned by a whole town and his parents just.. go with it? Alas, I’m not a character in Beck’s story and everyone is cool with Nate returning from the dead.

Nate promptly begins his psychological warfare on Skyler.

I never fully understood why Nate was so obsessed with tormenting Skyler and only Skyler. The bff was there as well. The reasoning just didn’t land well with me. Next to Nate rising from the dead, this was my biggest issue with Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are. I could not let go of either piece of reality. Was I still blindsided by the conclusion? Bet your last dollar I was.

At some point I will read another book by Harleigh Beck. The writing and plot of Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are were both great. The first twist comes and they just keep coming. You begin to question every interaction and conversation between characters. Every single thing that happens between Nate and Skyler will leave you wondering what is real and what is not.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
