It was a silly fantasy, I suppose, that the powerful alpha of the Highfell Clan could fall for the spoiled Southlands princess.

I had seen on Bookstagram that The Wolf King involved werewolves in kilts. And that was all I needed. I immediately went to Kindle Unlimited-after checking KOBO and the library because ew ku. Fret not, the series has since gone trad and hopefully will become more widely available.

The Wolf King Review

The Wolf King is an enemies to lovers werewolf romantasy by Lauren Palphreyman. The werewolves in The Wolf King are heavily inspired by a Northern Scottish-Highlands aesthetic. Yes, that’s right. They wear kilts. The humans in the South have a deep-seated hatred for them. However, much of the history, and cultural conflict between the two groups is left unexplored.

The Wolf King relies heavily on and is fueled by common romance tropes. Forced proximity, fated mates & love triangles. If you are looking for something with intricate world building and deep complex characters, this likely will not be for you. It’s just not that deep. The Wolf King focuses more on drama and romance than the world itself.

As the formula dictates, the human Princess Aurora is simply a pawn to her father the King. Like most characters in her position, she longs for her freedom. Instead, she is being forced into an arranged marriage. Obviously, the man she is set to marry is the worst. I mean, when are they not. Enter the kilt wearing Alpha, Callum.

Callum decides it is in his best interest to kidnap the Princess. The werewolf clans are divided and until they come together, they have no hope of ending the human-werewolf conflict. Believing the King to be in possession of a powerful relic, Callum wants to leverage Aurora for it. He hopes to break a curse, uniting the wolves.

Enter the kilt wearing, shadow daddy & Werewolf Alpha, Blake. The other love interest. Honestly, I am not a fan of love triangles and there is a heavy focus on the love triangle in The Wolf King. However, the rivalry between Callum and Blake does add an extra layer to the political backdrop.

While the world building was lacking in The Wolf King, I enjoyed the overall plot and characters. The romance between Aurora and Callum is faster paced bordering on insta love. Personally, I preferred what was brewing between Aurora and Blake. It is a slower, truer enemies to lovers, paced romance. Plus, team Blake all the way. We all know I love a good morally grey character.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
