About Bonded Fate by Beck Michaels

Synopsis

The stakes are higher, new questions will surface, and more blood will spill in the thrilling sequel of the Guardians of the Maiden fantasy series.

Reeling from Cassiel’s confession, Dyna struggles to understand what the Blood Bond means for them both, all the while trying to stay one step ahead of a newfound enemy. When reuniting with a familiar sorceress, she realizes the only way to defeat Tarn is to find her Guardians—all of them.

Cassiel never meant to tie himself to a human, especially one that inexplicably draws him. But then the bond develops a startling change, and it puts into question everything he thought he knew.

Zev straddles the line between human and wolf, unsure if his dark thoughts truly belong to the Madness. It’s growing stronger, determined to take over—and he may just let it.

The journey to get the answers they each need will test them all. But what Dyna doesn’t know is that it comes with a price, and it may cost more than she bargained for.

Review Bonded Fate Guardians of the Maiden 2

Review

“That’s the thing about stories.

They change over the years with each retelling, and by the end, no one can truly know which part was true.”

Bonded Fate by Beck Michaels is the second installment in the fantasy series, Guardians of the Maiden. Michaels picks up right where Divine Blood ends. Dyna, Zev, & Cassiel are making their way to Mount Ida, with Rawn joining their mission. Dyna has even convinced the sorceress, Lucenna, to join them for a while. However, Tarn & Von are still hot on their trail and Lucenna has her own problems hunting her down.

I found the pace of Bonded Fate to be slower than Divine Blood. Michaels was busy building her character’s personas rather than action for her series. Don’t get me wrong, there was action, but there was also a lot more diving into the inner workings of our crew. I had hoped we would learn more about Rawn in this book, but he is still a very secretive little elf.

Dyna & Cassiel are struggling with the knowledge of the blood bond Cassiel inadvertently performed while saving her life in Divine Blood. We spend almost the whole book with the two of them dancing around the elephant in the room. Several times, I found myself thinking – fuck me, spit it out, rip off the bandaid, and get it over with already. But, in the end, we discover something extra special about their blood bond – it’s a True Bond, which surprises even Cassiel.

One of the main overlying themes of this series is fate or free will? Dyna rightfully wonders what in her life has been chance and what has been predetermined by fate. How long has fate had its hands in Dyna’s life? Who else has fate been toying with? Our crew spends quite a bit of Bonded Fate searching for a Seer for themselves to hound with questions.

“That is the question, isn’t it? An interesting debate.

The fates present us with a path of destiny, but do you reach it because of chance or choice?”

Our poor Zev is also struggling, albeit, in a much different way. Between The Madness & The Other occupying his mind, Zev seems to spend a lot of time as a wolf during Bonded Fate. Zev is ready to give up and give in. He is drowning in despair & he believes the only way out is through Dyna. When he realizes she may not need him as much as he needs her, he plummets deeper into the darkness. A full-on hissy fit occurs when Dyna requests training to protect herself in combat.

Props to Dyna for realizing she can not protect herself & trying to get into combat shape. She is a weak little girl, strong-willed, but weak. Our crew finds Dyna some fae enchanted battle gear while on their journey – aka plot armour. They did acquire this plot armour in a fun and exciting way, so it’s okay. Cassiel and Rawn begin teaching Dyna how to protect herself in their downtime. Most importantly, though, she convinces Lucenna to teach her how to wield magic.

Lucenna was an excellent addition to the storyline. She first popped up in Divine Blood, but she sticks around in Bonded Fate, with Michaels giving us POV chapters from her perspective. Girl only has her own best interests in mind and makes that very clear to Dyna. Lucenna is on a mission to save every female sorcerer from a horrible fate, having their magic drained by their male counterparts.

Although I didn’t enjoy Bonded Fate as much as Divine Blood, it worked well as a second installment in the series. The storyline advanced, and we learned more about our crew. In addition, we meet a few new characters on the journey, some I suspect to be important later on. I’m excited to read book three when it comes out.

Now that Dyna is in Tarn’s possession and our crew is separated, I can’t wait to find more about Tarn, What Cassiel and Zev will do to get Dyna back, What will happen with the realms with proof Celestials exists? So many questions…

One thing I would like to point out and discuss is that there were several grammatical errors. People who complain about such things are worse than the errors in the book themselves. Authors work hard, editors work hard, they are human & computers like to auto-correct. This is especially true for authors who do not have a whole publishing house behind them.

I said what I said.

Guardians of the Maiden Quotes

★ Quotes ★

It moved like a wraith, tearing babes from their mother’s arms and tossing them into its wide jaws, their screams vanishing into smoke.

Dismembered body parts scattered like bloody puzzle pieces on the frozen ground.

Relying on hope was like kissing the edge of a knife and expecting not to be cut.

She visibly wilted like a small flower trambled on the road, squashed before having a chance to bloom.

Unchanging and insignificant like the sediment at the bottom of a lake.

The atmosphere pulsed with a dark energy that thrummed around her.

The whole world needs help, you cannot save everyone.
