Book Two Review : Tensions Rise in A Curse of Blood and Stone

Thoughts I had while reading A Fate of Wrath and Flame

A Fate of Wrath & Flame has been on my TBR for ages. Fairly certain it got there because I read He Will Be My Ruin. According to the five-star rating I gave on Goodreads, I apparently liked it. From what I can gather though, these are two different genres. I probably read the synopsis at one point, but I’m just going to dive into this and hope for the best.

Fair warning : I live in Canada, where weed is legal. Every book I read, I read while high. I read a good chunk of A Fate of Wrath and Flame while high af on edibles. On the plus side, I finally found an edible dose that knocks me on my ass. On the other hand, my pea brain lost the plot numerous times.

Skip to My Final Thoughts to avoid spoilers.

  1. Ah yes, burning witches at the stake. I wonder if these are real witches or just women.
  2. Real witches then. Well, some of them.
  3. Are these immortals of the blood drinking variety?
  4. The Nulling. I’m liking the terminology.
  5. I’m assuming the copper-haired woman is Sofie and this is what Malachi wants in exchange for Elijah’s life.
  6. I like that Romy stole books.
  7. Dear old dad isn’t as delusional as you think Romy.
  8. Fuck I love redheads. Tangent, I’ve been thinking about putting my hair back to red and I’m taking this as my sign to do so.
  9. I love a good cult.
  10. Okay so what is Romy.
  11. Well then.
  12. Two moons!
  13. Wtf is happening here? Did we go back in time and to another world? A past life?
  14. So why did this Romeria kill her soon to be in-laws?
  15. Woah now, the sister is in on this scheme. What’s happening here.
  16. Ugh life depts.
  17. Tainted blood. Very Van Helsing.
  18. Mental health? What century does Romy think she is in?
  19. Wendeline the Wise. I’ve been wondering what the difference between Ybaris and Islor is.
  20. I’m not so sure Romeria did kill Zander’s parents.
  21. I can get behind Zander’s logic. But Queen Neilina thinks Romeria is dead and I think this whole kit and kaboodle was orchestrated by someone else entirely.
  22. Game of Thrones exists in this universe. Well, in Romy’s.
  23. Fuck the map, Romy. You are in a place with two moons, ffs. On plus side, Zander is giving up information.
  24. On the surface, this marriage sounds like it would have been beneficial to both Islor and Ybaris. Still not convinced Romeria was a willing participant in this uprising though.
  25. Idk how I feel about Elisaf and his trustworthiness.
  26. This ring thing is interesting.
  27. A Fate was summoned. Who is Romeria? Why Romeria?
  28. What is Malachi up to?
  29. Many questions remain indeed.
  30. Elisaf is coughing up a lot of information.
  31. Evil Romeria was set up for sure.
  32. Are Romeria and Zander Elijah’s parents? That can’t be right. Although, timey-whimey.
  33. What is Queen Neilina going to do when she discovers her daughter is alive and well? I mean, kinda-sorta. I’m pretty sure the Queen wanted her dead.
  34. I think Sofie had a good grasp on what she dropped you into. Malachi for sure.
  35. Okay, I like Elisaf and his logical brain.
  36. There are a lot of things you haven’t considered Romy. The ability to put yourself in others’ shoes is lost on you.
  37. Why can’t Malachi just get this stone himself? Numerous references to him are around this place. Clearly, he is a god they worship. Why send Romy back in time to Romeria’s death to get it?
  38. Pretty sure this girl isn’t there to fuck Zander. For someone who can figure out guards based on footfall, Romy is slow to grasp what’s happening here.
  39. I mean, he definitely knew you were there.
  40. So how did the Islorians go from regular immortals to blood-drinking ones? How did the first blood-drinking immortal come to be? I hope Wendeline’s history lesson answers the hundred questions I have.
  41. Okay there Romy, just because you found out they drink blood is no reason to be a dick about things.
  42. Ahhh the water ! Thank you Wendeline.
  43. I’m slightly confused. Elijah died in the 1700s. What year is it in this two-moon dimension?
  44. Wtf is Malachi up to ?
  45. There’s always a prophecy.
  46. Interesting. Was this before or after Sofie’s original request? Prior I’m assuming.
  47. Why did I think this nymphaeum and the stone were the same thing? The stone is in the nymphaeum? And the nymphaeum is where the fates banished the nymphs to?
  48. That was quite the history lesson.
  49. Pretty sure Zander is more caring than you’ve given him an ounce of credit for.
  50. Elisaf’s smile would have to be patient to deal with this. My patience is running thin.
  51. Lord Adley eh. Is it his daughter scowling at Romy in the gardens?
  52. Idk man, still not convinced Romeria was evil.
  53. I mean, this does seem to be a long whispered conversation while everyone in court waits.
  54. Did Romy just agree to perform a live feeding at a fair?
  55. Off with Lord Adley’s slimey head already.
  56. You don’t know how right you are Atticus.
  57. At this rate, everyone is going to know this isn’t a mind-wiped version of Evil Romeria.
  58. Does Zander recognize Sofie?
  59. Romeria, wow. So many more questions now. I really didn’t want to believe it. I thought for sure she was just a pawn in someone else’s scheme.
  60. There’s a whole lot of fate summoning going on considering it’s been outlawed for two thousand years.
  61. Suddenly I’m distrustful of the seamstress.
  62. Almost four hundred pages and Romy still can’t get it through her head that those loyal to Zander tell him everything and that he is constantly questioning and testing her. Get with the fucking program already.
  63. The nerve of Bexley.
  64. This tavern seems like a good place to taint human blood.
  65. What is Aoife’s plan anyways? Is she in cahoots with Malachi? Or is Malachi trying to thwart her plan with his own?
  66. Wrong move slimeball. Clearly he hasn’t heard there’s a new Romy in town.
  67. A caster and a seer. Interesting.
  68. Okay so maybe I like Bexley’s nerve.
  69. Damn you Wendeline. I don’t think she’s who Bexley was referring to though.
  70. This puzzle has no edges. And yet, there are nine hundred angles.
  71. Finally an answer on the fucking ring.
  72. Wendeline is just full of useful information.
  73. No one but the Fates themselves understand.
  74. That tattoo!

A Fate of Wrath and Flame Review

I’m so glad I finally decided to read A Fate of Wrath and Flame. I was highly concerned I was falling into a reading slump. I had read a bunch of bangers and then a bunch of duds. I was nervous when I started A Fate of Wrath and Flame but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. It was almost perfect for me. My biggest complaint is the main character, but I’m confident that will go away.

I had a hard time with Romy, our main female character, not letting go of her/our world. Romy is sent from our current timeline and world to another. For me, it took her too long to accept and acknowledge that. Personally, I prefer the past coming to the future. Romy is a thief from the streets in the twentieth-first century complaining about her mental health while locked in a tower in another century, in a world with two moons. Time travel is my jam, and I think about it often.

I had a hard time relating to Romy. At some points, she was the kid who you just let shove the bobby pin into the electrical outlet. She was told repeatedly that everything she said would get reported back to Zander. And yet, every single time she was surprised. It aggravated me. The girl could figure out guards based on footfall but the two moons in the sky meant nothing to her.

All that being said, I really enjoyed the rest of the ride. Romy is human in an inhuman world. Tucker is building a big dangerous and complicated world. I liked how the inner workings of Islor and Ybaris were revealed through history lessons with Wendeline. There is a lot to unpack in those scenes, but there was a lot to learn. I’m interested in seeing where Tucker goes with her tale.

The seers are convinced the union of Romeria and Zander will put an end to the blood curse placed upon the Immortals of Islor. But with Romy in Romeria’s body, and Malachi pulling strings to accomplish his own goals – will it end the curse, or unleash another?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Elijah’s eyes widened, the idea of witnessing someone trampled to death lifting his spirits.

She clung to that scant thread of hopes as she wept, ignoring her hunger as sorrow overwhelmed her and she longed for yesterday’s return.

“Watch out for the demons. Especially the ones with the twisty horns. They’re here, walking among us, wearing our skin.”

The folded wings of a bat jut out from its hunched back, hanging tattered, as if something with claws had shredded them.

Before I let this go any further, he needs to know what I am.
