My Thoughts on Their Silent Graves – Detective Gina Harte #7
Their Silent Graves is the current mid-way point for the Detective Gina Harte series by Carla Kovach. The thirteenth book, Their Cold Hearts, will be released in April of twenty-twenty-three. I started reading this series back in twenty-nineteen when I picked up a box set containing the first three books. I flew through them and Gina has been a favorite character for me ever since. If I had a comfort series, this would be one of them. There is definitely some spoilers in my chaotic thoughts as I attempted to figure out the who and why of the crime. Skip down to My Final Thoughts to avoid them.
- Terry sounds like a real winner.
- I mean, I don’t like rude people either Gina but it’s not a criminal offence.
- Gina is hot and horny to arrest people it seems.
- Proper olden times? Fifteen or twenty years ago? Kids.
- I like the bell-on-a-string thing. Which was actually in proper olden times, centuries ago.
- I thought it was going to be a female in the coffin. Interesting.
- Ohh this is a fresh dead guy. I wonder how many there will be by the time we are done.
- Why’s it sound like the killer used a good coffin? Who murders someone in a good coffin?
- Cherie does not like Halloween. Shame.
- DC Wyre might be my favourite side character in this series.
- It’s not easy working in gloves. Agreed. I hated working in gloves.
- Oh shit, that was Gina’s Terry. He’s a fucking douche canoe.
- Mrs. O’Connor always coming through with the baked goods.
- Why are they not looking for other graves?
- Are they all old friends of Terry’s?
- Or is Cherie an old friend of Gina’s?
- Ngl I thought Cherie killed Penny, but she keeps calling her. Although, in a way it makes sense. (35%)
- So what did you and your merry group of friends do Cherie?
- We are headed in to I Know What You Did Last Summer territory.
- Where does Terry’s coffin making friend fit into all this? (40%)
- Idk why Gina is dead set on no one knowing what Terry had said/done to her. It is stupid of her to think Terry hadn’t told anyone, that’s the kinda douche canoe he is.
- Maybe now they will go and find the other two bodies buried in those woods. I’m fairly certain it’s the same woods. (57%)
- Cherie’s the classic reading people watcher?
- I should have paid more attention to the “when” at the start of some of these chapters.
- One of the merry band of misfits must be the kid of the coffin maker’s. How else do kids get coffins?
- So was there the prank first? And then they did it for real? Or is their secret just the prank? Who did they prank? (64%)
- Well they finally found Penny. And here I thought they were all buried in the woods. (75%)
- So where is Issac then?
- I thought Isaac was at least dead by now. I thought he was going to be the third victim but him and Marcus must have been in the masks. (81%)
- So the coffin thing is hers and hers alone. And Daddy dearest must have been a friend of Terry’s.
- No.
- Well that’s a questionable twist.
- Surprise. Surprise Terry’s buddy is an asshat.
- Something about this timeline seems off.
- Why does she think Cherie will go to jail? It’s a twelve-year-old game of he said she said.
- Is there no statue of limitations?
Their Silent Graves Review
Book seven in the DI Gina Harte series, Their Silent Graves, is not the best of the bunch. In fact, so far, it is my least favorite of the series. In Their Silent Graves, Kovach uses Halloween as the backdrop. Gina’s investigation takes place in the days leading up to Halloween, and the days after. I appreciate the Halloween references and the spookier atmosphere Kovach was creating, but I didn’t find it added to the story. It just as easily could have happened at Christmas.
Our main character, Detective Inspector Gina Harte is usually on the ball but with her husband’s ghost occupying her thoughts she continuously dropped that ball. I didn’t like it. Gina’s been through worse and held it together better in previous books. It seemed out of character for her to me. I also didn’t appreciate how she treated her coworkers this time around. It’s not unusual for Gina to delegate, it was how she was delegating. Gina is usually kinder and less demanding.
The case itself was far from exciting. In fact the only exciting thing about it was the coffins the victims were found in. But in the end, even that ended up being boring. I think my issue boils down to the connection to Gina’s past. It really didn’t need to be there. This isn’t the first book where Gina’s past has come back to haunt her. References to her dead husband are abundant in the series. Gina’s past is what has made Gina the woman she is today but not every book or case needs to have a connection to it.
