Little Doll

I wanted sin. And I wanted it with him.

Seeing as I am apparently in my Dark Romance era, I’ve been seeing a lot of That Sik Luv by Jescie Hall on my Bookstagram.

Spoilers Sweetie. Jump down to my Final Thoughts to avoid them.

  1. This is hilarious.
  2. I’m always amazed when the FMC sleeps through stalkers in their bedroom with them.
  3. So here’s the thing. I just dnf’d Hollow Hellions by Jodie King because the mmc was calling the fmc Little Dolly. And now Areo here has referred to Bri as Little Doll more than once. Dollface didn’t bother me in Madness by Shantel Tessier.  So idk, I hope Little Doll doesn’t bother me in this.
  4. Oh he definitely stashed them there on one of his many tromps through your house.
  5. No saving the souls of the town whores.
  6. The handwriting was awful. This is hilarious.
  7. Briony Strait is a slut for Saint. This is priceless.
  8. What addendum?
  9. I’m not sure I’m supposed to find this as funny as I do.
  10. Of all the books I’ve read with characters named Saint, this dude is my least favorite.
  11. This isn’t very cnc.
  12. This decon is gross.
  13. Sextortion
  14. Just spit it the fuck out.
  15. This is foolish now.
  16. I don’t feel like that’s enough lube.
  17. Not the crucifix.
  18. Well I’m glad they all got what they deserved.

That Sik Luv Review

Not all Stalker Romances are created equal.

I feel as though I’ve been reading a lot of books lately that have just not been my cup of whiskey. That Sik Luv by Jescie Hall was hard to swallow. The story was interesting enough- two characters both suffering from their own forms of religious trauma coming together to take on a system of perpetual abuse. The execution however, well that’s where things fell apart for me.

“You’re a woman without a voice, Briony,” he whispers against my lips. “Let me be the throat through which you scream.”

The eternal stain of condemnation.

Known to her peers as The Devil’s Doll, Briony Strait has overstepped her bounds. Pure determination has propelled her toward her dream of becoming the first female Magnus Princeps of the Covenant Academy. The church however, cannot have a woman in such a high ranking position within their organization. Bri’s existence is a threat to the carefully cultivated & depraved boys club nestled within her church. How dare a girl have a dream.

Aero is a man of his circumstances.

Abused by the church he was born into and subsequently outcast from, Aero is a damaged man. Tormented by the maltreatment of his youth he has become a cold, dark, obsessive, and manipulative adult. When the church deems Bri too big for her britches, Aero is sent by his boss to cull her from the flock.

Briony Strait will break for me. But only after I break the system that wants her gone.

To turn Bri against the system that wanted her gone, Aero continuously gave her clues and tools, putting her in situations where she would witness the corruption of the church. I found the overarching story to be slow and unnecessarily dragged out in favour of some mediocre sex scenes. It was a tad bit frustrating. The twists at the end could have been better executed. Some twists were twists simply because instead of answers or character dialogue, there was sex as a distraction.

In my opinion, That Sik Luv, is a bit too far on the non-consensual side of consensual-non-consent. Personally, I don’t like when an inexperienced character is in a cnc situation. I am also not a fan of contemporary age gaps where the older character waits for the younger character to come of age. With both of these happening in That Sik Luv, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.

What he doesn’t realize is he’s creating a monster. One with the same insatiable hunger for the sickest form of toxic love.

I’m falling headfirst into a swirling pit of flames and loving the burn of his fire against my skin.

“But I need you to bloom. I need you spread before me in all your dark, delicious beauty. Unravel your strength and show me the depth between your petals,” he says, running the back of those same fingers along my cheek.

I found my way through the darkness that once tried to drown me and made it my home. I emerged, dirtied and raw, with a heart that beats black.

I’m finding that pushing sweet, innocent Briony past the limits of her moral being is intoxicating.

I’m meant to kill her. They literally hired me to end her life. But I can’t. I won’t.

She’s my obsession, but more so, she’s my fucking existence.

I have to be careful with this fragile flower. Her petals are too fresh to hold her bloom.

“I love you with every echoed beat of my dark and hollowed heart, the hole in which contains my shattered ghost of a soul. I love you with all the fractured tears inside my tortured mind. With every agonizing breath I breathe.”
