It’s spooky season friends! I have zero idea how I came across Camp 1985 by Matthew R Corr but I figured October was the perfect month to finally read it.

Camp 1985 Review

Camp 1985 by Matthew R. Corr is the first book in the Slasherverse series. It is a campy 80s fueled slasher film, in book form. A group of tech-addicted influencer teens are sent to unplug at an 80s themed camp. The setting was nostalgic and atmospheric. I was there for it. From start to finish, it’s filled with 80s pop culture references. The camp may as well have been Camp Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th vibes were so fun.

Camp 1985 is fairly quick paced. However, due to this quick pace, there is no room to connect with the characters. For me, there were no standouts and I think it was just too young adult for me. They lacked any real depth and were simply overly exaggerated stereotypes. That being said, it is typical of basically every slasher film ever. We experience the horrors of Camp 1985 through the eyes of dance influencer, Ander.

With not much else to do, Ander and his new camp friends decide to try their luck with a Ouija board one night. I mean, with no phones or internet, what else are a bunch of teens to do? Obviously, in doing so they unleash a vengeful spirit upon the camp. Enter the Evil Dead portion of the story. The combination of supernatural/paranormal and slasher tropes worked well. Personally though, I would have preferred a more grounded and real killer.

The death scenes were over the top and creative and I enjoyed the gory descriptions-even if I can’t see them. While the ending does set up the continuation of Corr’s Slasherverse, it just wasn’t it for me. Don’t get me wrong, the ending is fine. It just could have been so much better. Depending on my mood, I may or may not continue the series.
