King's Kiss by Beck MIchaels

The darkness is ruled by an entity the world has feared since the dawn of time. Some call him the Netherworld King. Others, the God of Shadows. He nearly conquered the realms, until the Heavens chain him in the black heart of a mountain he swore never to return to.

Princess Alora’s kingdom teeters on the edge of ruin as war and a strange Sleeping Curse spreads through the land. When her hand is promised to a conquering prince to secure a fragile peace, she makes a desperate deal with the trapped god in the mountain overlooking her home.

The God of Shadows offers his aid under two conditions: she must set him free… and become his bride. Though she tries to deceive him, he steals her away at the altar, dragging her into a court of demons, seduction, and a power she was never meant to awaken.

At first, Alora is desperate to escape, until she begins to suspect her godly husband may not only be tied to the curse, but to her past. As she unravels forgotten truths buried in shadow, Alora must resist the pull of a god whose obsession burns hotter than any sun.

But as fate tightens its grip, their bond threatens to unmake the world. Because some love stories are written in blood, and this one might end with a kiss—or death.

King’s Kiss by Beck Michaels

Once upon a time, there lived an evil dragon within the cursed mountain. His shadows devoured all light, casting the land in eternal darkness. One day, a brave princess rose up to slay him, but he devoured her too…

One of my most anticipated reads of the year, King’s Kiss, is finally here. Truthfully , I’ve been anticipating this book for years. Way back when I started reading Guardians of the Maiden I was interested in the Gods from Dyna & company’s world. I was over the moon when Michaels announced a spin off series about just that, The Chronicles of Urn. It’s been a few years since King’s Bride was released and I have been waiting for the God of Shadows ever since.

We all know I love Michaels over here. Unless you’re new, in which case, we love the immensely talented Beck Michaels over here. I was super fortunate to receive an advanced copy for review purposes. As always babes, these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Spoilers Sweetie. Jump down to my final thoughts to avoid out of context spoilers.

  1. Loving the connections to Jokull and Sunnëva with their three kids!!
  2. Ugh. I’m mad at Jokull and Sunnëva’s kids. Big mad. .
  3. The whole court! Imprisoned. In a mountain!
  4. The fucking past?!?! So before he ever met Alora? He has to re-woo his bride?!? I thought it was a reincarnation thing. Oh my.
  5. Weird questions Lady Zinnia.
  6. Father of the fucking year over here.
  7. Ew I do not like this husband to be.
  8. The curse started after Alora left you say?
  9. What did Alora’s mother know?
  10. I wonder what’s up with her blood..
  11. So the first time she died was from this curse. And it got worse when she died. But it also only started after she left?
  12. The curse and her blood are one hundo related.
  13. I mean, Delphi is on to something even if she is a rotten bitch. Alora has something to do with the curse.
  14. I love that the mountain is its own “living” entity.
  15. The bedroom the castle made for her !
  16. & now a kitten!
  17. Deimos is killing me.
  18. Nexus!!
  19. She did awaken something. Now hurry up a figure out what it was Rune! Ya girl needs to know.
  20. I love that the female demons will just kill their chosen eternal mate if they displease them. A warning to the next.
  21. And the gifts! Female demons got the life.
  22. The white fire of the Anar tree sounds a lot like Alora’s powers.
  23. I need to speak to Lady Zinnia. ASAP.
  24. I don’t trust Caelum.
  25. Excuse me, but that’s a god promise she just made.
  26. What the holy hell
  27. It’s the old god of the Netherworld. I’m convinced more now than ever.
  28. Two! Two ! 🍆
  29. Dish the dirt on Caelum already. I do not trust that fucker.
  30. Alora can take his place.
  31. I used to like you Sunneva.

  35. My heart can’t take any more.
  36. Fucking Caelum.
  37. The same fucking Druid?????
  38. Fucking Druids.
  39. Dyna’s time???
  40. Have we met all the Gods yet? Is this the first time?

King’s Kiss by Beck Michaels Review

The moment they stole everything from him, Rune vowed to end the world.

Chronicles of Urn is an interconnected standalone series focusing on the forgotten Gods of Urn from Michaels Guardians of the Maiden series. So far each book in the prequel series has centered around a different God-there are seven Gods in the world of Urn. wink wink. We know very little about these Gods, they are mere myths in the time of the Guardians. King’s Kiss is the story of the God of Shadows and the bride that was stolen from him.

The Dark War, Family Drama & Some Timey Wimey Fun

After a decade of waging his Dark War, Rune at last held what he needed to resurrect his bride.

Seeking to resurrect his beloved, Rune goes on a ten year rampage leaving nothing but death and destruction in his wake. Love a man that will burn the world down for her. And in Rune’s case, will steal his brother’s power via his nephew so he can resurrect her with death magic. Alas, Rune is foiled and punished for his unhinged behaviour. The Court of Sin and their King are imprisoned in a mountain. And for a little extra emotional torture the mountain is located in his deceased bride’s kingdom. Just what an unhinged imprisoned God needs. Oh and babes, he’s chained to the floor in manacles… trapped in his dragon form.

This isn’t a reincarnation or a resurrection…it’s a re-wooing.

If you were thinking the previous paragraph was feeling a little too spoilery, babes that was the first three minutes. King’s Kiss is a thicccc one and those first three minutes set the tone for the entire book. During his imprisonment Rune was sent one hundred and fifty years into the past, thank you Daddy Elyon. I one hundred percent went into this thinking Alora was going to be a reincarnated version of Rune’s original bride. I was very surprised. Floored even and I love Michaels even more for it. Reincarnating Alora would have been so much easier. Less creative, but easier. Alora has no recollection of her previous life while Rune remembers every detail. Including her dying in his arms. Tragic.

Do I have a new favorite Shadow Daddy? Yes. Yes I do.

Michaels did not disappoint when it came time to bring the main character energy to the God of Shadows. Like it was hard. Speaking of hard, this God is well equipped. Twice. I knew going into King’s Kiss that I was going to love Rune. I was obsessed with him and his villainous ways in King’s Bride but there was no real depth to his character. Rune was simply the villain in Jokull and Sunnëva’s love story. And don’t get me wrong, Rune is a villain. A villain with daddy issues. Jokull might be the God of Death, but it is Rune who rules the Netherworld and all the demons in it. He is a complicated God, enduring what his brothers and sisters have not. Even a God, when broken, will lash out. He was always going to be the villain and then the one thing he coveted above all else was taken from him. I don’t think Michaels is ever going to top him as an mmc.

Citizens of Argyle are falling into an eternal sleep.

Desperate for a way to break the sleeping curse on her kingdom, Princess Alora calls out to the God of Shadows rousing him from his slumber. I was skeptical of Alora going into King’s Kiss. I wasn’t sure anyone would be good enough for the God of Shadows. I ended up loving Alora for Rune, she was perfect for him. Her backstory is heartbreaking, mirroring Rune’s own life in ways. From leading a very lonely existence secluded from all civilization to discovering the truth about herself-she grows into a woman who can contend with not just the Gods but the Primordials as well. Now I can’t imagine anyone else with Rune.

The Lord of Shadows. Prince of Darkness. King of the Netherworld. Bringer of Sin and Damnation.” His gaze fixed on hers, red and endless. “You, princess, may call me Rune.

The world of Urn feels bigger and the stakes are so much higher than in King’s Bride. I’m talking world ending stakes. All because of a silly curse. If the God of Life itself aka Rune & Jokull’s daddy gets involved, you know it’s a big deal. Obviously we know everything works out in the end but the journey there was harrowing. There were times I was white knuckling my kobo remote. I was cursing my eyeballs, brain and thumb for not reading, processing and pressing fast enough. I didn’t even want to blink during the epic climax.

I have loved everything Michaels has written and yes, I have read everything. In my opinion, King’s Kiss is her best work yet. Alora & Rune’s story was pure emotional roller coaster from start to finish. The ending had me in an absolute choke hold. Michaels ripped my heart out and proceeded to direct a herd of elephants over it. Maybe two herds. And I just keep coming back for more.

Grant me my freedom, Alora Lark of Argyle, and I shall grant you yours.

If darkness called, would you answer?

I did. And you should too.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Quotes

King’s Kiss Quotes

She would find her own way in life, even if that meant making a deal with the very darkness itself.

Shadows clung to Rune like a living mist. His crimson eyes glowed bright as they watched her intently. A predator who had been kept waiting.

His true form pushed against the surface of his being, clawing at him, straining to break free.

The throne room stretched before them like a cathedral of nightmares.

“Take my hand, little bird. Let me show you how beautiful the dark can be. “

“Defiant little flame. I can’t help but want to ruin you.”

“There is no amount of blood I wouldn’t spill for you.”

“I fear I am cursed to chase you across a thousand lifetimes.”
