I think I always knew I was going to die young. Like I had this… silent, invisible clock ticking down to my final moments plastered above my head. Maybe that’s why I was so reckless, crazy. Why I sought after adventure. Why nothing scared me… Except, there was always this… feeling I couldn’t shake that something was in the darkest parts of every corner, under every bed, closet, or room, like a ghost watching me. Waiting to take me. My own, personal reaper.
But it was always only during a lightning storm that I could see the outline of my reaper. No scythe. Just a tall, faceless shadow in a hood, staring at me in the dark…
That was the thing though. It was never the storm itself that scared me. Never the loud booming of thunder. Never the howling wind or the way the windows rattled. Never the sound of rain pounding against said windows. It was just that goddamn lightning.
Seems fitting, I suppose, that I’d die before my twentieth birthday during a freak lightning storm of the century… I just always thought I’d die while doing something dangerous – F*ck it. I’d even take a boring death like simply dying in my sleep from a brain aneurysm or even an early onset heart attack.
Anything.
I’d take any other way other than this…

Review

Rayne-Moore University by Ruby M. Darling

I’ll be whatever the fuck she wants, whatever the fuck she needs me to be in her quest for retribution. Fuck a hero. I’ll happily help her become the villain she so desperately needs. Truth be told, I hope she burns this whole motherfucking place down. I’ll be the matches, the gasoline, the kindling. I can’t wait to watch my Raven rise from the ashes she’ll leave at her feet like a fucking phoenix. -Damon

The Rayne-Moore University duet by Ruby M. Darling is a dark, why choose romance with one hell of a revenge plot. And babes, the revenge comes from our FMC, Raven. I love a good fmc out for revenge and Raven did not disappoint. One night on campus Raven is brutally attacked and left for dead. Against all odds, Raven survives. Girl’s committed to an institution, but she survives. Due to the sheer brutality of the violent attack on Raven, she left mute. Four years later, Raven sets foot back on campus and our story begins.

My spooky little Siren, wrapped in the tentacles hidden in this fog that laps at my feet like cloudy water, playing her cello, summoning sailors to their deaths with her song. -Maverick

The elite world Raven belongs to thinks she is broken after her ordeal. Damaged. Useless. And their mistake will be their undoing. This isn’t just any old world Raven belongs to either. Because of course it isn’t and I love secret societies. Raven plays her part and lets the society believe she is a broken little bird of no consequence to them. I loved Raven. Her silence isn’t a weakness, it’s a weapon. A weapon she wields to perfection and one by one Raven starts to pick off everyone and anyone connected to the attempt on her life. And what I loved most is that she did it all by herself. No man saved Raven. Raven saved Raven. Girl got her revenge all on her own.

I’m so fucked for Raven Monroe and I officially don’t give a fuck.-Jonas

Not only is this a why choose romance, its chock full of taboo goodness. Two of Raven’s lovers hold positions of power and authority over her. Damon is her doctor and so obsessed he quits his job and follows her to Rayne-Moore. Then there is her professor, Maverick, whose control begins to unravel the moment he lays eyes on Raven. And last but not least, Jonas, the baby of the harem. Jonas reminded me of a puppy dog. That boy was elated to even be in Raven’s vicinity. Joe Arden did an amazing job portraying them in the audiobook, accents and all. But truly, the standout character for me was Raven.

I am still without all the answers… and until I have them, members of the Syndicate will continue to fall until I’ve torn off the head of the snake and eaten it to nourish my blackened soul. -Raven

Raven is one of the best dark romance fmcs that I have had the pleasure to read about. As if her villain era origin story wasn’t enough, when we finally uncover the truth about why Raven was beaten and left for dead, my heart broke all over again for her. All those involved could have died a bit more painfully in my opnion but it was great to see Raven dish out her revenge. Heather Firth was phenomenal at bringing her to life. Darling has since started a tie in series about Raven’s bff and it is so nice to see her happy and thriving.

The Rayne-Moore University Duet has made its way to my favorite why choose series list. Joining other series like Steph Macca’s Dance With My Demons and Elliott Rose’s Port Macabre. I have already started Darling’s spin off series Duchess and Devils-a why choose mafia romance about Raven’s bff Sabrina. So far I have only listened to the first book but I’m going to go ahead and tell you to add that one to your tbr too.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Quotes

Rayne-Moore University Quotes

Any chemical imbalance I have, he balances it with just one touch, one kiss and when it’s both, every atom that is me buzzes with an intensity so fierce, I always feel like I want to explode.
I wonder if this is what it’s like when new galaxies form?

“I’m crazy for you. And only you. I’m near you and I need to be closer. I’m inside of you, and it’s not enough. When I’m away from you, I feel like I’m drowning. But then I see you again and I can finally breathe right. You have totally and completely consumed whatever sanity I had left, and I don’t ever want it back. You’re my heart, baby. Every beat of it is yours.”

She’s my present and my future, I had no past before her, and I want no future without her.

I had once likened her to an angel that had fallen to earth just for me and now, dressed like sin, she absolutely looks the part.

I need her more than I need water to survive. She is the balm to my insanity and yet, every time I’ve been inside of her sweet body, I’ve been lost in throes of delirium.
