Flames: A Monster Rom-Com by LO Gold Monstrously Mine #2

I am a monster, a beast born from the fiery pits of the Underworld. I am an immortal creature meant to purge the plague of humanity from the world we know. I have existed before most remember, and I shall persist long beyond the measurement of recorded time. I am fury; I am fate; I am flames.

Until her–the female whose skill as a thief rivals my own. She is clever, seductive, and cunning. But, most importantly — she is mine.

My life may not have been a fairytale, but a smart woman finds a way to survive in this cruel world. I may be a thief, a con artist, a fraud; but if I am unsavory it is only because I was made this way. I have carved out a nice little gig for myself–find a mark, lure them in, and take what I need before disappearing into the anonymity of the thousands who populate this city.

Phoenix is the most obnoxiously attractive man I have ever met. After he steals a payday right out from under my nose, we make a deal–whoever is able to steal the next item wins. I have no intention of losing, especially not when more than just money is on the line.

Review

Flames by LO Gold

The hubris of men is truly astounding.

Flames is the second book in the Monstrously Yours series by LO Gold. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the first book, Frost, yet. It was on my holiday tbr in 2025 but I did not get to it. bad melyssa. Lucky for me this is an interconnected standalone series so I can and did enjoy Flames without having first read Frost. & yes, it has been carried over to this years holiday tbr. I was recently accepted to Gold’s Street Team and was fortunate enough to receive a copy of Flames in advance for review and content purposes. As always babes, these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Flames is a monster mafia romance. Our mmc, Phoenix, is well, a phoenix. Flames is based in slavic folklore with his true form being a giant fire bird with not one, but two massive little birds for our fmc, Marissa’s, enjoyment. One of the things I like the most about novellas as someone with aphantasia is that they are to the point. There is no room to describe the taste of a mighty morphing phoenix’s cum in twenty seven paragraphs. You can simply say it tastes like fireball and be done with it. Honestly, I’m not sure twenty seven paragraphs would have invoked the same reaction. Anytime Phoenix’s spunk was mentioned, I had flashbacks to my late teens and early twenties.

Marissa is an art thief on a mission when she stumbles into Phoenix one night. They were both after the same tapestry when Phoenix steals it right from under her nose. And believe me, Marissa worked hard to get close enough to that tapestry to steal it. I’m a pescatarian so those steak fingers were extra gross to me. Not one to lose, Marissa tracks him down and they enter into a competition. Best thief wins. I really enjoyed Marissa. She was feisty and funny. I love vibing with a character’s humour. It’s a great way to connect with them. Especially in something short like a novella.

Patient, stoic, aloof, distant, that’s what cool and attractive men are supposed to be when pursuing a woman, right? Too bad I’m not a man. I’m a fucking Firebird. Possessive. Heated. And greedy. So motherfucking greedy… for her.

If you are a monster romance lover I highly recommend Flames. It’s a fun, quick read. It’s not heavy or overly emotional. I really liked the mafia aspect, it adds a layer of danger to the story and sets the tone of the world very quickly without wasting words on world building. & I mean, he’s got two peens, what more do you want? I also think Flames would be good if you’re on the fence about how much monster you want. It’s a bit more shifter than full on monster. Great as a gateway to full blown monster. I read this weird fever dream halloween novella last year where he’s a pumpkin head bean stalk thing the whole damn time. I still think about it.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Quotes

Flames Quotes

I must admit—I can see why humans rave about the smell of barbecue, roasting flesh smells quite mouth-watering.

Smeared on my window are the letters ‘E N I M’ and they seem to be written in something pale and sticky. It looks suspiciously like cum.

The beast in me roars to life, demanding I shift. He wants to pin her down, shove her ass up in the air, and claim her—right here and right now.

The problem is that I don’t just want her—I crave her, down to the very marrow of my fucking bones. The urge to completely consume her in the fiery embers of my desire is blinding. My cocks leak at the very thought of her pinned beneath me, fear and pleasure swirling through her icy irises as I slide both my members into her tight little cunt.
