Light's Out: A Dark Stalker Romance by Navessa Allen Into Darkness #1

Trauma nurse Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. She likes the one she’s landed on just fine. To her, nothing could top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

I want things most people don’t, craving darkness and depravity instead of light and love.

Josh Hammond has spent his life avoiding the limelight, but his online persona is another story. At night, he posts masked thirst traps for his millions of fans to drool over, but one follower has caught his eye: Aly. After reading a comment begging him to break into her house wearing a mask, he decides to take her up on her offer.

Together, Aly and Josh live out their darkest fantasies, unaware that Aly has captured the attention of someone else. Someone with far more sinister intentions than a little light stalking. As Josh turns from predator to protector and the stakes heighten, he must ask himself how far he’s willing to go for the woman he’s obsessed with.

Review

Lights Out by Navessa Allen

I didn’t want him morally grey. I wanted someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

Lights Out is the first book in Navessa Alllen‘s wildly popular dark rom-com series, Into Darkness. Lights Out is so popular, Netflix is adapting it into a tv show. We are getting A LOT of adaptation announcements lately, some of which are not making it out of development. For instance, the tv/movie rights to Sarah J. Maas’s ACOTAR series have been reverted back to her. As far as I am aware, as of right now, Lights Out is still in the early development stage. Do with that with you will my friends.

I loved every second of Lights Out but I’m not sure how I feel about an adaptation. Lucky for me, I wont be disappointed by casting choices but I wonder how true to the source material the show will be. I’m looking at you knife scene. Up until I read Lights Out, I really had no idea this type of novel existed. Yes, prior to reading it, I had read other dark romances. But I personally don’t think of Lights Out as dark. First and foremost, in my mind, it is a Romantic Comedy. It just happens to have some darkish overarching themes and characters who aren’t into vanilla sex. In many ways, the relationship between the two main characters is extremely realistic.

Lights Out is my kind of rom-com but it obviously wont be for everyone. Yes it’s dark-the mmc, Josh, is a hacker and stalker but he is also a hilarious insta thirst trap. Josh’s humour and commentary is top notch. There’s a reason he is an extremely popular book boyfriend. His chemistry with the fmc, Aly, is intense. Josh might fall first, and we love when that happens, but Aly falls just as hard. The two of them are obsessed with each other. I really liked Aly as an fmc. I thought she was great. We love resilient, independent women over here. She’s relatable and passionate. And ultimately, unapologetically, herself.

My entire life was devoted to caring for others. I wanted someone to take care of me for once. I wanted someone to want me. No, need me. I wanted a man so obsessed that he hacked into cameras to watch me when he couldn’t sleep.

At the end of the day, Lights Out will forever hold a special place in my heart. I had been going through quite a bit of upheaval and turmoil in the year or so leading up to its release. I had moved twice. First off the island I was living on and then across the country. I had zero motivation to read. When Lights Out became a booktok sensation, my life had finally settled down. I was coming back to who I was as a person and finding my footing in this world again. A new chapter of my life began and then I picked up Lights Out and met Fred the cat. I will be thankful of that decision for the rest of my life.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
