Of Blades & Wings: A Viking Fae Romantasy by Eliza Raine Flame Cursed Fae #1

Princess Madivia is the Ice Courts best kept secret – until the Valkyrie come for her.
Only her family knows what she can really do, and how dangerous it is to leave her tower. But, she has been selected by the gods themselves to train at Featherblade to become a Valkyrie, an elite fae guardian of Odin.

If she is to make it against the other rooks, survive the Wild Hunt, or battle against the Frost Giants, she has to earn her wings and bond with an ancient animal gifted to her by the gods. She has to get stronger, and work out who her enemies are, and who she can trust.
And she has to do it all under the burning gaze of Kain the Ruinous. Villain of Featherblade. Her obsession.

The disgraced fire-fae combat trainer has had his wings removed and been cursed to burn anyone he touches. He is bound to Featherblade, but he makes no secret of the fiery devastation he would wreak if he could leave.
And it doesn’t take him long to realize that Maddy and her secrets are the key to his revenge.

She knows she should avoid him. He’s lethal, unhinged, and feeds on fear. But he follows her every move, he shows up whenever she is in danger, and he dominates her dreams.
He tests her, pushes her, threatens to find, and break, her limits.
When he is standing before her, fire in his eyes and heat blazing from his cursed skin, Maddy fears she would let the world go up in flames if he told her to.
And if she’s not strong enough, that may be exactly what happens.

Review

Of Blades & Wings by Eliza Raine

Of Blades & Wings by Eliza Raine is the first book in the Flame Cursed Fae series from the Brides of Mist & Fae Universe. The individual series are interconnected, the books within the series are not. Brides of Mist & Fae is an adult Fae romantasy rooted in Norse mythology with Viking elements. I was fortunate to receive an advanced digital copy from the publisher for review purposes prior to its upcoming traditional release. As with all arcs babes, these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

“The threat is the Giants. There have been multiple reports of Frost Giant attacks, and we believe they are trying to find a way to reconnect their realm to our world.”

Of Blades & Wings is told from Princess Madivia’s perspective. Maddy is an Ice Court Fae Princess but her shit ass parents parade her around as handmaiden. They have practically disowned Maddy for having weak magical abilities. Sure, Maddy can’t conjure and use ice magic in any meaningful way but what she can do is recall literally every piece of information she stumbles across. Her parents feed her information for their own selfish purposes and use her as as walking encyclopedia of sorts. fuck them parents. The true extent of Maddy’s abilities are unknown and I’m convinced there is more to her magical memory gallery. Let’s face it, the formula dictates there is.

When a missive arrives seeking the Princess Verglas for Valkyrie training, her family assumes the princess in question is her sister. As far as anyone is concerned, there is only one Ice Court Princess. As it turns out, weak as she is, Maddy is the Gods chosen recruit. She is promptly whisked away to Featherblade for training. These fuckers didn’t even let her pack her bags. This poor girl was set up for failure and it aggravated the fuck out of me. If that wasn’t aggravating enough, she doesn’t really stand up for herself either. I was honestly surprised I ended up liking Maddy as a fmc but she is well written and grew on me. Her determination is admirable. Now that the opportunity has presented itself, Maddy wants her wings. She wants her val-tivar.

Of Blades & Wings isn’t an action packed story. There’s no real action until the final moments of the book. Most of Of Blades & Wings is spent on training and I found the plot to be slow because of it. However, I did appreciate Maddy not instantly being able to do everything. It’s basically been drilled in this poor girls head and the readers, that her magic, her mind and her body are weak. All of her fellow trainees and the Valkyrie themselves believe the Gods made a mistake. Some are even actively working against her. Maddy keeps her head held high through it all.

Of Blades & Wings is a slow burn romance. There is no explicit sexual content in this book but I suspect that to change. Right now Maddy & Kain do not trust each other. Kain is a Valkyrie without his wings. He’s disgraced, feared & unpredictable. And I need to know more about hm and his villainous ways. I found the world and magic systems interesting enough. The writing was decent and I’m interested in seeing where this story goes. That said, I didn’t love Of Blades & Wings but I am adding the series to my tbr.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
