The Storm and the Darkness Review

I don’t really have much to say about The Storm and The Darkness by Sarah M Cradit. I have no idea how I ended up with this book. You will find that to be a running theme around here – I get lost in the free ebook section on the Kobo website regularly.  During Christmas, they had free ebooks advertised as the first book in a series & I’m almost positive that’s how I ended up with this book. I had no idea what I was in for when I decided to start reading The Storm and The Darkness at the end of March – none.

The Storm and The Darkness is part of a series called The House of Crimson and Clover – And this is one complicated series friends.  You know the ones; 37 novella’s, 6 duologies & 8 trilogies. Ok, maybe that’s a bit extreme – but I know you know what I’m talking about. The House of Crimson and Clover is a well established long running series of books; which is why I don’t have much to say about The Storm and The Darkness. I’ve barely scratched the surface of this epic world Cradit has created.

The Storm and The Darkness is currently listed on Goodreads as #0.8 – a novella within the series, but it was once listed as #0.4 in the series.  I told you it was complicated and I probably should of did a bit more research before I started reading. I ended up taking a quick visit to Cradit’s website to figure the correct reading order.  Turns out it’s a saga ! & According to Cradit’s website there are two reading orders. The saga currently has twenty-three books; twelve volumes and eleven lagniappes.

The Storm and The Darkness, according to Cradit’s website, is Volume One of the series – so I did start from the beginning. I won’t lie though – I’m a bit intimidated by this one; there are twenty-three books! But if I can read A Song of Ice and Fire, I can read this.  Or at least that’s what I told myself when I went looking for Volume Two.

My official rating on this book is a 3.5. It was a good read filled with mystery, suspense and great characters. But it was more of a slow burn mystery then a fantasy novel in my opinion. You know the kind – secluded island, a winter storm & a crazy person on the loose. The main character, Ana, does have magical abilities but we barely scratched the surface of them. The Storm and The Darkness was a good introduction but for now, I don’t have much more to say about it other then I’m hoping to get to the second volume later this month.
